BASECAMP Traineeship

Basecamp Baptist Camping Victoria Logo

BASECAMP in mountaineering terms is a place where climbers set up a temporary community for shelter, preparation and planning, equipping and acclimatisation, and the start of an exciting adventure. It is a place to come alongside other climbers and adventurers who are embarking on a similar expedition. It is at BASECAMP where climbers engage the skills and insights of others more experienced in what is ahead to help guide them safely to the summit and back.

Baptist Camping Victoria’s BASECAMP has a similar purpose. It is a place designed for young people to come and establish a temporary community to develop, challenge and ultimately explore their God-given futures with other likeminded people. It is a place of safety, of equipping and preparation, and definitely the start of an exciting adventure.

BASECAMP is a traineeship with BCV that has partnered with Box Hill Institute, the Baptist Union of Victoria and Whitley College (a college of the University of Divinity). Over the course of the year the trainees will work on camp with our team, as well as study and attain a Certificate IV in Outdoor Leadership and participate in the EMERGE Leadership Course. Trainees have the option to do this course for accreditation, which will award them two diploma level Leadership Units, as well as complete another two units towards a Diploma of Theology – doing both options will award an Undergraduate Certificate. A second year traineeship will be available for those who show they have what it takes, where you will complete the rest of the units for the Diploma of Theology, and gain greater a responsibility at work.

The traineeship has been running since 2007 with many young people completing the program. Armed with a greater sense of self and gained qualification, these graduates have gone on to successful careers in education, youth work, social work, outdoor recreation and full-time ministry roles in the Church.

The Traineeship includes studying the following two courses:

EMERGE Apprenticeship Pathway

Baptist Union of Victoria (BUV)

In partnership with many local churches and agencies, including Baptist Camping Victoria, the BUV is offering this program as “an intentional missional leadership development pathway for emerging leaders”.

Structured around the 4 C’s of Context, Community, Curriculum, and Coach, this program is a 1-year pathway beginning in February and ending in December. Participants meet up on a monthly bases in a community environment to learn from each other, and through interacting with a range of experienced leaders.

Subjects include leading self, leading others, leading groups/teams/organisations/initiatives, and leading and living missionally.

Note: The EMERGE Apprenticeship Pathway has been approved as 2 Leadership Units for a Diploma Course accredited through Whitley College and the University of Divinity.

Certificate IV in Outdoor Leadership

Box Hill Institute

This course has been developed with industry assistance to provide skills and knowledge in outdoor recreation specific activity fields. The activities students will be immersed in have direct employ-ability outcomes.

PLEASE NOTE, YOU MUST PASS A WORKING WITH CHILDREN’S CHECK AND A NATIONAL POLICE CHECK TO ENTER INTO THE INTERNSHIP.

What Our Trainees Say . . .

I’m keen to grow in my maturity, character and relationship with Jesus, whilst being involved in camp activities. Experiencing living out of home and working with lots of different people. The 12 WATTS program just sounded perfect for me.

After coming to Camp Wilkin for a week for year 12 retreat last year, I couldn’t wait to come back and saw this as the perfect opportunity. I’m looking forward to a rewarding and challenging year to grow in myself and in Christ.

I’ve been looking forward to doing this internship since I visited for work experience in 2012. I’m excited by the prospect of developing myself spiritually and in my leadership capabilities. I would also like to assist campers and peers in understanding who they truly are in Christ whilst enjoying and rejuvenating themselves at camp.

My decision to come to Camp Wilkin was largely based on a desire to learn, grow and mature in my faith and character. I look forward to having the opportunity to speak into different people’s lives as they come through the camps, as well as journeying with other interns, camp staff and Anglesea locals. This year will be as challenging and as rewarding, but I’m confident that I will come out of it knowing that I’ve just lived one of the most worthwhile years of my life.
